Exploring the hills of Buda offers the perfect blend of natural beauty, rich history, and a touch of nostalgia. Whether you’re a local or a visitor in Budapest, spending a day discovering the hidden gems of this area will leave you refreshed and inspired. From scenic chairlift rides to panoramic views at historic towers, plus delightful local treats, this day trip is one you’ll remember for years to come. Ready to escape the bustling city streets? Let’s dive into a perfect Buda Hills itinerary.

Zugliget Chairlift

Start your adventure by hopping on the bus at Szell Kalman Square, heading to Labanc Street. From there, it’s a short walk to the Zugliget Chairlift, which will take you up on a magical ride to Janos Hill. During the 15-minute ride, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of Budapest’s skyline and the lush, forested hills surrounding the city. If you visit in the fall, like we did, you’ll be mesmerized by the vibrant hues of gold, orange, and red in the trees.

  • Note: The chairlift only sells round-trip tickets, so don’t forget to keep the portion not used for the next visit. Other blogs mention that the Budapest Card gives you tickets to ride the lift. This is different than the Budapest Pass (which is for public transportation).
  • Getting There: From Szell Kalman Square, take bus 22 or 22A to Kuruclesi and walk 15 min. or Take bus 22 to Budagyongye and change to bus 291 to Zugliget.
  • Hours: 10:00 – 15:30; Price: 3500HUF

Elizabeth Tower

Once you reach the top of the Janos Observation Deck, take a moment to enjoy the various lookout points and nearby snack stands. If you’re traveling with kids, there’s a lovely playground to enjoy. We made our way toward the Elizabeth Tower, where we had two paths to choose from: one through the trees and another along a cobblestone road. We opted for the more scenic tree-lined route, which, while a bit steep, wasn’t too strenuous. Along the way, we took frequent breaks to enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

At the summit, you’ll find the Elizabeth Lookout Tower, built in 1902 to honor Empress Elizabeth (Sissi), who visited in 1882. The tower stands at 528 meters, offering panoramic views of Budapest’s landmarks, including the Parliament Building and the Chain Bridge. Inside, you’ll find photos documenting the tower’s construction and the many celebrations that have taken place here over the years.

Normafa Park

After soaking in the views at Elizabeth Tower, head back toward the Janos Hill observation deck and continue, following the path to Normafa Park. This expansive park is perfect for walking, hiking, biking, or simply relaxing. It also has Anna Meadow, a lovely area with a playground, picnic tables, and benches, making it an ideal stop for families.

After some fun at the playground, we continued walking towards food stands to indulge in a delicious snack of cherry and apple strudel and cheesy langos from the local food vendors. There are plenty of tasty options to fuel your next adventure, from sweet treats to hearty meals.

Children’s Railway

The highlight of our day was undoubtedly the Children’s Railway, a charming and unique experience in the hills of Buda. Established in the 1940s as a Soviet project, the railway is run entirely by children, who take on roles ranging from ticket sellers to conductors. It’s a delightful throwback to simpler times, where you can hop aboard a train managed by young staff dressed in uniforms and enjoy the scenic ride through the hills.

You can choose between a one-way or round-trip ticket, but we opted for a one-way journey to Hárshegy Station. The staff were incredibly friendly and professional, and the stations themselves were adorned with old photographs and historical memorabilia. At each stop, you’ll find family-friendly attractions such as playgrounds and picnic areas, making it a fun and educational experience for all ages.

  • Tip: Check the timetable before you go to make sure you don’t miss your train!
  • Cost: One-Way 1000HUF, Round Trip 1800HUF

Kaán Károly Lookout

After disembarking at Hárshegy Station, we followed a steep trail through the forest toward Kaán Károly Lookout. It was a bit of a challenge, but the scenery was well worth the effort. When we reached the lookout tower, we were treated to stunning panoramic views—especially at sunset. This quiet, peaceful spot is a perfect way to reflect on the beauty of Buda’s hills.

  • Note: Make sure when you get off the train to ask a train attendant for directions to the lookout.

Nancsi Neni Restaurant

By now, we were ready to refuel with some hearty Hungarian cuisine. We took a bus to Nancsi Neni Restaurant, where we treated ourselves to some of the best goulash and schnitzel in the area. This charming eatery is a local favorite, and we were lucky enough to enjoy live accordion music as we dined. If you plan to visit, be sure to make a reservation, as the restaurant tends to get busy, especially in the evening.

  • Getting There: from Kaan Karoly Lookout point, you will need to walk to catch the bus at Iren St., bus 157 or 157A to Nagyret St.
  • Menu: You can visit the website to see what is on the menu.
