If you are planning to rent, most likely your landlord may want to keep the utilities in their name to be reimbursed monthly. Not all landlords do this, but this is an issue you would want to discuss with your landlord.
In some cases, the utilities need to be in your name to obtain residency in your host country. Again, each country is different therefore you will want to explore common practices within your host country.

What is the installation fee, and will they require a deposit since you are a foreigner?

Familiarize yourself with local regulations and requirements for setting up utility services. Check if there are specific documents or permits needed. This sometimes can be tricky because what is registered at the tax office may not be the same property as the actual meter. Check with your landlord to get accurate information on the property’s location. Make sure that all previous bills have been paid out.

You may want to bring along someone who can translate, as we have discovered that in most of the offices, the person behind the counter does not speak English. It is also helpful to have a native speaker with you to interpret all that you need to sign-up with that particular utility company.

Prepare the necessary documents, which may include proof of residence, identification, and, in some cases, a rental agreement and property insurance. Ensure all documents are translated, if required. This may require a visit to the notary’s office.
