Embarking on a journey through the Algarve region of Portugal, the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail is an experience that should not be missed. This 6-kilometer route is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, offering spectacular views of rugged limestone cliffs, picturesque beaches, and natural caves. Whether you’re an avid hiker or just someone who loves to take in natural beauty, this trail is the perfect adventure. It provides a shorter, but equally stunning alternative to the famous Fishermen’s Trail, making it an ideal choice for those looking to explore the Algarve’s coastline in a single day.

The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail Route
The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail is a point-to-point hike with several options to suit your preferences:
- The Full Hike Round Trip: This 7-mile round trip offers about 1200 feet of elevation gain, starting from Praia da Marinha to Praia do Vale de Centeanes and back.
- The Full Hike One Way: This 3.5-mile hike covers the entire trail one way, with around 600 feet of elevation gain. You’ll need a taxi or Uber to return to your starting point.
- Partial Hike Out and Back: This 3.3-mile hike, which I consider the best part, takes you from Praia da Marinha to Praia do Carvalho and back. You can extend your hike by 2 miles to reach the Farol de Alfanzina lighthouse, but remember, you’ll need to hike back.

Getting to the Trail
Driving is the most convenient way to reach the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail. Renting a car is highly recommended if you’re planning to explore the Algarve. Public buses and trains are available, but they take much longer and might not get you to all the desired spots. The starting point is at Marinha Beach, about 7 km from Lagoa. Known for its beauty, Marinha Beach has been named one of the top 10 beaches in Europe by the Michelin Guide and one of the 100 most beautiful beaches in the world.

Best Time to Hike
To make the most of your hike, start early in the morning, especially during the summer months, to avoid the midday heat. Spring and fall offer warm but comfortable temperatures, making these seasons ideal for hiking. Winter brings mild temperatures and fewer tourists, providing a pleasant hiking experience without the crowds.

Trail Highlights
The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail is marked with yellow and red stripes, making it easy to follow. The trail offers stunning coastal views from start to finish. Some of the highlights along the route include:
- Marinha Beach to Benagil Beach: The hike starts with some of the most stunning views, including sheer limestone cliffs and sinkholes. Benagil Beach is a great spot for a rest or a swim.
- Benagil Beach to Praia do Carvalho: This short segment offers beautiful coastal views and ends at the picturesque Praia do Carvalho, accessible through a cave.
- Praia do Carvalho to Alfanzina Lighthouse: This stretch of the hike offers some of the best views, with the lighthouse providing a perfect spot for a rest.
- Alfanzina Lighthouse to Praia do Vale de Centeanes: The final segment takes you through a narrow strip of land between housing developments and the ocean, leading to the finish at Praia do Vale de Centeanes.
