2 weeks before move cover

With the butterflies fluttering and the countdown clock ticking, you’re just two weeks away from your big move abroad! While this might feel like the home stretch, there are still a few crucial things to take care of before you jet off on your adventure.

Mail Matters

First things first: have you arranged for mail forwarding or a digital solution? Consider switching to paperless statements for bills and banking. I also recommend using a virtual mail service unless you have a relative who can manage your mail for you. You will need an address for important documents in the future, so it’s essential to keep an address in your home country.

I have a video that covers options for virtual mailboxes and mail forwarding.

Cloud Castle

Speaking of clutter, ensure all your important documents are safely stored in a cloud-based service. This is your digital safety net, allowing you to access them from anywhere in the world!

Tech Check

If you’re bringing your laptop, make sure everything is backed up – cloud storage, external hard drive, the works! But wait, there’s more! If you’re leaving any electronics behind, wipe those hard drives clean before saying goodbye. Nobody wants their personal data floating around in the ether!

Watch EXPATS TOOLKIT on YouTube

Expats Toolkit has created a YouTube channel offering real experiences of moving and living abroad. I will share details of how to go about deciding to move, transitioning into a new country, and many other helpful tips to make this process go smoothly.

Unsubscribe, Unsubscribe, Unsubscribe!

Double-check all your subscriptions and home deliveries – newspapers, magazines, that monthly box of coffee – and cancel or update them with your new address (if possible).

Return the Borrowed

Speaking of returning things, don’t forget any library books, borrowed tools, or that Tupperware container your neighbor lent you last month. Leave on good terms!

A Little Pocket Change

While plastic is fantastic these days, having some local currency on hand when you arrive is a lifesaver. Exchange a small amount for airport taxis, unexpected purchases, or delicious street food you just have to try.

Also, don’t forget to have your bank linked to your cloud bank, like WISE so that you can access funds without paying high exchange rate fees.

The Farewell Farewell

Moving day might be solo, but that doesn’t mean you have to do it alone! Schedule a friend or family member to help you get to the airport with your luggage. A little extra muscle and moral support go a long way!

Confirm Travel Details

Confirm your flight details, including check-in times, gate numbers, and baggage allowances. Also, confirm your accommodation and transportation once you arrive in your host country. Weigh your luggage and make sure it meets the weight requirements to avoid paying extra for overweight baggage.

Prepare for Long Flight Entertainment

Download e-books, movies, or podcasts to keep yourself entertained on the long journey. Don’t forget to wear your compression socks, water bottles, hydration sprays, and mouthwash to help make your ride more comfortable and feel refreshed once you land.

Plan a Meet-Up

Plan to connect with expats once you arrive. It’s a great way to start building relationships.

Pack Adaptors

Make sure you have the proper adapters for all your electronics.

Get a VPN

When traveling out of the country, your digital devices will notice. To access some sites, you will need a VPN. Although there are free VPNs, I suggest you get a paid service.

Last Minute Appointments

Schedule those last-minute appointments. Get a haircut, pedicure, dental cleaning, etc. Although they may offer these things in your host country, you don’t want to have to deal with them upfront.

Unlock Cell and E-Sim

Before you leave the country, make sure you have unlocked your phone. It is also a good time to get connected to an eSim so that you can easily use your phone while in airports or in transit.

Wow, that’s a whirlwind! But with these final tasks ticked off, you’ll be ready to conquer your new adventure with confidence!
