Check out these major sightseeing spots in Avanos…..
Chez Galip Pottery
Situated on the banks of the Kızılırmak River, Chez Galip Pottery stands as a testament to Avanos’ rich pottery-making history. This workshop, founded by master potter Galip Körükçü, provides you with an extraordinary opportunity to witness the creation of exquisite ceramics.
As you step into Chez Galip Pottery, you’ll be greeted by the rhythmic sounds of pottery wheels and the sight of talented artisans molding clay with their skilled hands. Artist Galip greeted us as we entered the studio, quickly offering a complete demonstration with his wife, Lilian, explaining the techniques used to create Turkish pottery. From traditional to contemporary designs, the workshop showcases a wide range of pottery items, including plates, bowls, vases, and decorative pieces.
Lilian will take you through molding, firing, and painting each piece of pottery. As you wander through the studio, you can stop into their shop and purchase pieces to take home with you. An excellent souvenir for keepsakes!

Sentenz Hali
For those who appreciate the beauty of handwoven rugs and carpets, Sentenz Hali is a must-visit destination in Avanos. This family-owned establishment has produced exquisite textiles for generations, using traditional techniques passed down through the years.
As you enter Sentenz Hali, you’ll be greeted by a kaleidoscope of vibrant colors and intricate patterns adorning the rugs and carpets on display.
We had a personalized tour of the facility by Ugur, who shared the historical background of rugs and explained their design and connection to historical families and events. Sentenz Hali is also a school teaching those interested in learning to be rug weavers. Most of the rugs are a blend of wool and cotton, and each knotting of the weave is the key to the carpet’s durability. We also had the pleasure of watching a weaver making a silk carpet. He then walked us through how the silk pods are spun into making a thread and how natural products are used to make colored dyes.
You can observe the weavers in action, learn about the intricate processes involved, and gain insight into the cultural significance of these beautiful textiles. Additionally, the gallery offers an extensive selection of rugs and carpets for sale, allowing you to bring a piece of Avanos’ craftsmanship and culture into your home.
- Hours: Sentenz Hali is open from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM daily.
