Hiking the Lycian Way in Tekirova, Turkey, is a fantastic way to explore the stunning natural scenery of the region and immerse yourself in its rich history and culture. The Lycian Way is a 540-kilometer-long trail that winds through the mountains and along the coast of the Lycian region, from Fethiye to Antalya and is considered one of the most beautiful hiking trails in the world.

Looking for a way to enjoy the beautiful spring weather and nature, we loaded the car with food, water, and gear and headed to Tekirova to explore the Kapali Lycian Way Trail. The Kapalı Lycian Way is a beautiful hiking trail that runs along the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. It is a popular route for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts who want to explore the stunning scenery and breathe fresh air.

To hike from Kapalı Lycian Way to Kleopatra Koyu in Tekirova, you will follow the trail southwesterly. The distance between Kapalı Lycian Way and Kleopatra Koyu is approximately 10 kilometers, and the hike should take 2-3 hours, depending on your pace. However, because we decided to enjoy the water at Keolpatra Koyu, we spent a little more time than planned.

We parked the car along the road, where our Google map marked our hike’s start. You may find a man serving tea and drinks with his barking dog near the sign pointing you to the trail. He greeted us with a smile and directed us to where to begin.

The Lycian Way

Although we hope to make the entire trail at some point, we joined it in the city of Tekirova. The Lycian Way is a long-distance trekking route that runs along the southern coast of Turkey, starting from Ölüdeniz in the west and ending in Geyikbayırı, near Antalya in the east. The trail covers a distance of approximately 540 km and passes through some of the most stunning landscapes in Turkey.

The Lycian Way comes from the ancient Lycian civilization, which once flourished in the region. If you decide to trek the complete route, you will encounter archaeological sites, including the ruins of ancient Lycian cities, temples, and tombs. The trail also passes through remote mountain villages, verdant forests, and rugged coastal terrain, providing hikers with diverse experiences.

The route is well-marked with red and white stripes, making it easy for hikers to follow. It is also divided into 29 stages, each covering a distance of between 8km and 24 km. This allows hikers to plan their journey according to their fitness level and time constraints.

Our Trek

Along the Way, hikers can expect to encounter a wide range of flora and fauna, including wildflowers, orchids, eagles, and goats. You can also dip in the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea and relax on secluded beaches. But, of course, this would have happened if the temperatures were slightly warmer (we were visiting in late February).

As you approach Kleopatra Koyu, you will be rewarded with stunning views of the secluded beach and crystal-clear waters. This beautiful bay is named after the famous Egyptian queen Cleopatra, who is said to have swam in its waters with her lover, Mark Antony.

Hiking from Kapalı Lycian Way to Kleopatra Koyu is a rewarding experience that offers a unique blend of natural beauty, history, and culture. Pack plenty of water, sunscreen, and snacks, and wear comfortable hiking shoes to enjoy the trail to the fullest.

  • When to go: The best time to hike the Lycian Way is from April to June or from September to November when the weather is mild and comfortable for hiking.
  • Trail difficulty: This part of the Lycian Way is moderately challenging, with some incline ascents and rocky terrain.
  • Trail markers: The trail is well-marked with red and white painted signs and signposts at major junctions. However, bringing a detailed map and a GPS device is still recommended to help you navigate the trail.
  • Accommodation: Although we did not see any accommodations in this section of the trail, there are options to consider if you plan to do a longer hike. Also, you can always stay in nearby villages such as Tekirova.
  • Water and food: Bring water and snacks, as you will not find any place to purchase these items in this section of the Lycian Trail. You will find a water fountain, but I recommend you bring purification tablets when drinking from the fountain.
  • Highlights of the trail: Bring your camera or phone to take stunning pictures along the way.
  • Permits and fees: There are no permits required to hike the Lycian Way
